We Are Spiritual Beings: Beyond the Illusion of Physicality

We Are Spiritual Beings: Beyond the Illusion of Physicality

Modern science reveals something astonishing: our physical bodies, which seem solid and tangible, are actually made up of 99.9999999% empty space. This mind-bending fact challenges the way we perceive our existence, nudging us closer to the realization that we are not physical beings. This by default makes us spiritual beings.

The Illusion of Physicality

At the atomic level, every part of your body—cells, bones, organs—is composed of atoms. An atom itself consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons, and the space between these electrons and the nucleus is vast. The "solid" feeling we experience in our bodies is merely the energy created by the interaction of these empty particles, but in reality, we are space.

This scientific understanding aligns with many spiritual traditions that teach the material world is an illusion. By looking at ourselves not as physical beings but as manifestations of energy and space, we can begin to embrace a spiritual understanding of who we truly are.

Energy and Consciousness

If we are empty space, what is it that makes us feel so alive and connected? The answer lies in energy. Quantum physics says that all matter is, at its core, vibrating energy fields. These energy fields can be thought of as the life force, or "spirit," that animates us.

Even more compelling is the fact that our spirit, or consciousness—the awareness that gives us the ability to think, feel, and experience the world—cannot be explained by biology. Neuroscientists are still trying to uncover the nature of consciousness, but many spiritual perspectives suggest that it is not limited to the brain. Instead, consciousness is a manifestation of our spiritual essence, transcending physical space.

Spiritual Lessons from Empty Space

Understanding that 99.9999999% of our bodies is empty space can transform the way we think about ourselves and our place in the universe. It invites us to realize that the physical world is not the entirety of our existence. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience, temporarily bound to bodies that are made of space and energy.

This perspective offers a profound sense of connection to the universe. The same empty space that makes up our bodies exists in the stars, the earth, and everything around us. The atoms in our bodies were forged in the hearts of stars, meaning that we are quite literally made of the energy in the cosmos.

This realization invites us to see ourselves as part of a greater spiritual whole, interconnected with all living beings and the universe itself.

Embracing Our True Nature

By embracing the truth that we are empty space, we can also begin to embrace our spiritual nature. Within and beyond this physical illusion lies a deeper, spiritual essence—a connection to the universe and to others.

The shift in perspective from seeing ourselves as physical beings to recognizing ourselves as spiritual beings allows us to live with greater intention. It encourages us to cultivate mindfulness, compassion, and awareness of the energetic and spiritual connections that shape our lives. When we meditate, pray, or simply sit in silence, we are tuning into the vastness of the space within us and embracing our true, spiritual nature.
